Seven categories, A through G, are formed from the official sporting ranking. They unfold across a four-year cycle in separate competition windows: D and E in Year 1, G in Year 2, C and B in Year 3, F and A in Year 4. The paired categories do not play at the same time. Category A crowns the absolute WUFO World Champion; B–G crown their respective Category Champions.

Eight teams move up and eight move down across each adjacent category boundary for the next complete cycle. Category A has no higher category and G has no lower one.

Members compete with peers of similar sporting level in divisions. In the full 241-Member architecture, Divisions 1–29 contain eight teams each and Division 30 contains nine. Each division plays a home-and-away round robin within a four-year cycle: 14 matches per team in an eight-team division, and 16 in Division 30.
In a standard intermediate eight-team division, three teams rise, three fall and two remain after the completed cycle. Division 1 cannot promote upward; the lowest division cannot relegate below an uncreated division. In the initial nine-team Division 30, the top three rise and the other six remain.
